LAMDA CLASSES

What is LAMDA?

LAMDA is the London Academy of Music and the Dramatic Arts. LAMDA awards certificates to students around the country, giving them officially recognised grades - like the ones achieved when learning a musical instrument or in dance.

LAMDA exams can currently be taken  in Public Speaking, Mime, Acting, Verse and Prose, Musical Theatre, Reading for Performance among others. We currently offer tuition in Verse and Prose - although we are able to offer more based on need and demand.

Our Sessions

Sessions can be held for individuals or up to four students at a time, each student receiving one-to-one tuition in the session.

Sessions include work on vocal technique, posture, vocal and facial expression.

Students work on examination pieces with a view to progressing through the grades as their skills develop. Some of this depends on the maturity, ability and commitment of the students. Typically, examinations are taken once a year in each discipline, or possibly twice, again depending on the student.

We choose to enter students in examinations at the grade appropriate to them. We work hard with every student to achieve the best possible outcome, but feel that pressurising students is counter-productive and reduces enjoyment of the process.

The Examinations

The exams themselves are taken at the nearest public examination centre. In our case, this is Northampton, although there are alternative centres to use if necessary. The dates of exams available at these centres will be discussed with students preparing for their next exam.

A fee is payable for the exam  - this is LAMDA's fee and is not influenced in any way by Phoenix Arts.

Following the examination, which is taken with an officially appointed LAMDA examiner, students are given feedback including their pass or fail result. If (WHEN!) a student passes, they are also given further commendation based on their performance. A simple pass is closer to an average result, a 'merit' is awarded to students who demonstrate a higher level of skill while outstanding students achieve 'distinction' at the grade taken.

Examination results for the higher grades give students UCAS points, strengthening University or College applications.

Why LAMDA Exams?

As well as the UCAS points at higher levels, LAMDA exams:

  • Give even very young students a sense of achievement

  • Children learn vital life-skills

  • The pieces children learn and explore are enjoyable and diverse,                      assisting with Literacy knowledge

  • The exams are a mark of excellence and commitment to the arts
